Savour Kilkenny’s Children’s Programme is Jam Packed with Events for all the Family to Enjoy

Savour Kilkenny, the South East’s premier festival of food is taking place this October bank holiday weekend (28th -31st Oct) and has a jam packed schedule with something for kids of all ages. Savour Kilkenny, which is this year celebrating its 10th Anniversary, has always strived to ensure the festival was an occasion that all the family could enjoy, but this year it has revealed its most extensive children’s programme to date, with many events free.

The festival, which will see in the region of 30,000 people descend on Kilkenny especially for the culinary celebration is delighted to be able to cater for children, and in particular given the festival takes place over the school holidays there will be plenty to entertain both kids and parents alike.

Commenting on the extensive Children’s Programme, Marian Flannery, Festival Director said, “We’re really excited to have such a broad range of events for children at Savour Kilkenny 2016. From workshops to plays and competitions, there really is something for all children and it will hopefully help to ignite their interest in cooking and in food, while also ensuring they have some fun along the way as well.”

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th October from 12pm-5pm, Savour Kilkenny will present an extended two-day Young Food Producers Market at MacDonagh Junction’s Workhouse Square. Visitors are encouraged to come along and meet local, young food producers (aged 10-17), who have created their homemade produce for sale in the buzzing indoor market. Anne Neary, Ryeland House Cookery School, will judge a taste competition and will be visiting the stalls to see which products taste the best.

At the festival, Kilkenny Cookery School will launch its search for Kilkenny’s Junior MasterChef 2016. Award-winning chefs and owners of the school, Mary and Neil McEvoy, are running two competitions– one for children aged 10+ and one for those aged 13+. Eight finalists will be selected from each age category, and will be invited to recreate their dish at Kilkenny Cookery School. A panel of judges will then select the winners on Sunday 30th October, who will be presented with prizes.

As well as fantastic foodie kids events, there will be a film-making workshop hosted by The Young Irish Film Makers, a circus and a cinema club, so kids of all interests will have a wonderful weekend.
