#SightforHungryEyes – 5 top restaurants, 5 dinners, 1 common goal

Some of Ireland’s most exciting chefs have joined forces to support #SightForHungryEyes, a unique project aimed at raising funds for families affected by Alzheimer disease.

Founded by Italian chef Cristina Giacomelli and brought to Ireland by Manuela Spinelli, the project will feature a series of unique fund-raising dinners hosted at five top restaurants and locations between October 4 and 9, 2016

Cristina Giacomelli and Luciano Tona, the creative force alongside Ross Lewis at Osteria Lucio in Dublin will collaborate with five top Irish chefs to produce an exciting menu that celebrates the very best of local, Irish produce in a nation that is making its mark in the global culinary world and increasingly growing as a food destination.

Cristina, the daughter of Italian eyewear producer and Alzheimer sufferer Renato Giacomelli, began her mission to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, which affects around 48000 families in Ireland, in her native Italy where #TiMangioConGliOcchi (literally, I eat you with my eyes) events were a hit in some of the nation’s top restaurants.

Manuela Spinelli said: “Cristina Giacomelli is a remarkable woman who has used her family heritage in eye-wear to design a limited range of bespoke sunglasses to be sold during a series of charity dinners, where she cooks alongside the resident chef

“The events have been a hit in Italy, raising money to support families affected by Alzheimer’s, and I am delighted that a number of top Irish chefs are supporting the event, allowing Cristina and Luciano to cook alongside them in their restaurant.

“I would encourage anyone with a passion for good food and superb Irish produce to book their place as they will also be supporting a good cause at what promises to be fun and successful event.”

Michelin-starred chef Tona, former Head Master Chef at ALMA, The international School of Italian Cuisine in Parma, Italy, will collaborate with Giacomelli to prepare a tasting menu, which will include a ‘SPLASH DISH’, namely a dish that symbolises the spirit of the project, an Italian dish, based on local Irish ingredients.

The dinners are ticketed events. The project #SightForHungryEyes will be introduced during the evening and guests will be given the opportunity to purchase a pair of glasses, specifically designed by La Giacoma. Packaged in an original box which includes one of four Italian regional recipes, the glasses are personalised and available in two models and nine different colours.

The cost of the glasses is €120.00. The net proceeds from the sale of the glasses will be donated to a family affected by Alzheimer’s disease, in each of the five Counties involved.

As a family carer, Cristina understands better than anybody, what it takes to look after an Alzheimer patient and is acutely aware of the financial difficulties families on a low income may encounter.

Ideally, she is looking to identify an Alzheimer patient’s family in real financial need. Her project is really rooted in a local network that will help identify such family. The involvement of local groups, associations and local branches of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland will be most welcome and will be paramount in creating local connections.
