20,000 People Expected to Visit Strandhill People’s Market in the Run Up to Christmas

After the success of the first Stranhill Food Festival in October, the team behind both the festival and the Strandhill People’s Market are upping the ante this festive season giving the people of Sligo, and those visiting the county, seven chances to shop local in the run up to Christmas.

The hugely popular night markets are making a return and will be opening from 5pm -9pm every Friday in December, while the day markets will run every Sunday from 11-4pm.

Up to 20,000 people are expected to visit the annual Christmas celebrations at Strandhill People’s Market in the unique venue of Hangar 1 at Sligo Airport from December 1st – 22nd.

One of the biggest markets along the Wild Atlantic Way, this Christmas Strandhill People’s Markets will offer national and international visitors a chance to purchase high quality gifts and indulge in hearty food from the artisan food and craft producers that will descend on the village for the seven festive markets.

Santa too will be paying a visit, touching down in Sligo every Friday and Sunday throughout December. All funds raised from the Santa’s grotto will go towards an all inclusive centre for children and young adults with special needs through local charity ‘Our Voice their future Northwest’

The market has already proven to have had a significant economic impact on the surrounding area, creating employment, generating visitor spend and making a substantial contribution to the winter economy in Sligo.

“Christmas is always a hugely successful time for our traders at SPM” said Kieran Mulrooney, who organises the market. “Following on from the first Strandhill Food Festival in October, our team are now gearing up for seven dates in Hangar 1 with some of the most talented artisan producers in the country.”

“We’re expecting crowds of over 3,000 at each market meaning our overall footfall will see more than 20,000 people visit Hangar 1 this December.”

“We’re asking Sligo locals to come out and support the market which in turn will help our region to continue to grow and bounce back from harder times. When shopping this Christmas remember that every €10 spent at Strandhill market generates €24 of benefit to the local community in Sligo.”
