The Old Barracks Roastery – A Coffee Lover’s Dream Brewed True

Welcome to the new home of coffee. Located in Ireland’s tidiest village Birdhill, County Tipperary, The Old Barracks Coffee Roasters has been nick-named the Ballymaloe of Coffee. This is the new exciting project from the coffee visionary Alan Andrews of Coffee Culture, a state-of-art artisan coffee roastery, a gorgeous petite café and a barista training facility all under one roof. The Old Barracks Roastery has it all for both coffee devotees and cafe owners.

The roastery specialises in the world’s greatest coffees and it wholesales to high-end cafes. Thanks to the roastery-café set-up, you will be able to experience the roasting process while having a flat white or filter coffee. Enjoy a sit-in with fellow coffee fans while travelling through some of the best coffee farms in Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi one cup at a time.

As a cafe owner, you can even arrange a meeting to roast your own coffee under the supervision of The Old Barracks Roastery‘s team. All the experts are on hand to talk all things coffee with you, from sourcing, storing, roasting, cupping, brewing methods and latte art pours.

Need to grab something for later? From bags of freshly roasted coffee, must-have accessories and coffee subscriptions, the roastery café also stocks anything that coffeeholics might need for their every-day cup of black gold.

Having launched coffeeculture.ie in 2009, founder Alan Andrews chose to specialise in delivering coffee education and training to the hospitality trade. Eight years later, Coffee Culture manages two locations – the first on St. Stephens Green (South King Street, Dublin) and the second on the first floor of the Old Barracks Roastery. Coffee Culture delivers structured barista training classes to the trade and manage brand standards for some of the biggest café operators in Ireland.

Andrews has been quietly creating his new Roastery project since 2015 when he placed a small training room for his Coffee Culture business on the first floor of the Old Barracks Building. Since then he has bootstrapped the new roastery project and it will open in April of 2018.

“The vision was to create a space where we could pull together Ireland’s coffee community. To do that we had to have a really special building and to create a very unique destination. We will bring coffee lovers together at every level, whether you want to brew these amazing coffees at home for yourself or buy them to use on your bar as a café owner. We have managed to create a space where coffee lovers can escape to, a quiet relaxed environment away from the hustle and bustle of a city vibe.”

To make all this happen, Andrews has gathered some of the best industry experts to guarantee that each sip of The Old Barrack coffee is just right.  Trish Ferguson (Sensory expert) manages the Coffee Culture Dublin training academy, she is a sensory judge at the National Barista Championships and technical judge for the Irish latte art championships, a facilitator for the Barista Guild of Europe and World of Coffee annual global competitions. She will split her time between Coffee Culture and The Old Barracks Roasters offering sensory guidance and coffee quality input on a weekly basis.

Conor Naughton (Coffee Quality lead) an award-winning café owner, is well-known across the industry.  Not only was his Suas Coffee House named one of the top coffee places in Ireland by the Irish Times, but Conor also won Today FM’s title of “The Best Cup of Coffee in Ireland 2015.”

Dalton Green (roasting, brewing and quality control consultation) the owner of Rift Coffee and SCA National Championship participant, is leading the way in coffee quality in Limerick. He has just opened a new store called Rift Coffee in Limerick’s business quarter where he is serving coffee he is roasting in The Old Barracks Roastery alongside guest coffees from other top roasters across Europe.

With their combined knowledge and hands-on experience, you know that you and your coffee are in good hands.

The location for the roastery itself is magnificent. This almost 300-year old building breathes the history of a town dating back to 1720. Originally meant as a home for retired nurses, this barracks building has served a number of roles, including a Garda station, grocery shop and a Tipperary Crystal outlet.

With such a rich portfolio, no wonder the Old Barracks radiates a unique beauty, sprinkling some extra wonderment and historical charm over the Old Barracks’ new cafe-shop-roastery complex.

Take the ‘trip to Tipp’ and experience world class coffees for yourself.  Keep an eye on the social channels (insta @oldbarrackscoffeeroasters) for updates on their free weekly tastings and what new coffees have arrived to roast this month.
