The Westport Food Festival Returns this June

The Westport Food Festival has just announced the programme of events for this year’s festival. Moving to a new summer slot at the end of June, the festival will see the return of some favourite events and exciting new ones.

Layout 1The official festival launch takes place on May 19th in Hotel Westport with a food forum featuring Michelin star chef J.P. McMahon. Everyone is welcome but you have to get tickets in advance here.

The Wyatt Hotel are hosting a festival fundraiser on the 26th of May with Áine Maguire of The Idle Wall. Áine will be running the Great Irish Food Quiz where foodies can pit their wits against each other. The quiz will also support local charity Western Care.

The festival itself kicks off on Friday 24th June with The Banquet – a Celebration of Mayo Food at Hotel Westport. The menu is a collaboration between local chefs and will celebrate the best of local produce and talent. The menu will feature some familiar products as well as a few surprises from the chefs. Tickets will be available at a later date on Eventbrite but you can book now by calling Hotel Westport on 098 25122.

Over the festival weekend there will be plenty of events for the whole family including Mushroom and Seaweed Foraging, Kid’s Pizza Making, Kayaking Picnic, the Bike Buffet and Foody Tours. The Artisan Beer Race provided a winning combination of thrills and spills last year, and will be bigger and better in 2016.

The Food Village at The Octagon will take place on the Saturday and the new midsummer date should add even more appeal to the traditional food village which pops up in the heart of the town. From noon The Octagon will be transformed into a bustling outdoor market with stalls and tasty street food.

Cookery and cocktail demonstrations are an integral part of the food village. The first demo kicks off at 12pm with Stefan Matz and they continue right through to 4pm with talks from Catherine Leydon and Shane Smith.
