Thirsty Thursday pick from O’Briens: Insight Sauvignon Blanc

There are certain grapes that one immediately associate with a country: Malbec and Argentina, Shiraz and Australia or Tempranillo and Spain. Even though Sauvignon Blanc refuses to be tied to one specific terroir, the grape has found a home in New Zealand, especially in the Marlborough region where it was first planted in 1973.

Nowadays, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most popular renditions of this white wine and even though the country makes a comparatively small quantity (it produces less than 1 per cent of the world’s wine) it has earned the respect and praise from the international community of wine lovers.

Wine Wednesday pick from O'Briens: Insight Sauvignon BlancInsight Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (13,5% ABV) is what an elegant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is meant to be. The grapes come from a single vineyard in the Waihopai Valley within the Southern Valley sub-region of Marlborough.

The area’s cool but dry climate and soils that are sightly richer in clay give the land potential for good aromatic whites and Pinot Noir, as well as for delicate Sauvignon Blancs that are closer to fruits than to fresh cut grass.

Aromas and flavours of grapefruit, passion fruit and lime zest on the fruit side and a breezy minerality merge to create a refreshing white wine that feels balanced thanks to a mouth-watering acidity.

Thanks to this profile, the wine pairs well with lightly seasoned seafood and grilled vegetables. Dishes such as pan fried plaice or grilled mackerel will be a good match.

Insight Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2015 is available at O’Briens and it is usually €18.95 but it’s currently on offer at €12.95 (32% off).
