The first weekend of the year has finally arrived! After a week or readjusting back on our desks, we look forward to some me time. If like us, you’ve made it a new year’s resolution to try new things this year, surely a glass of something different will be a brilliant way to start. Below, three wines for the weekend to invite you explore less famous regions and varieties…
Via Arxentea 2016
13% ABV
€16.95 – Available at Baggot Street Wines, 64 Wines, Sweeney’s
A blend of local white grapes (Treixadura and Godello) from Monterrei, a region located in Galicia, Spain (not very far from Albarino contry, Rias Baixas).
Very aromatic and medium bodied, it is nectarines and crisp green apples, inviting on the nose and balanced and plump on the palate. A good companion to rich white fish such as cod as well as chicken.
Lingenfelder Fox Label Dornfelder 2010
12.5% ABV
€15.95 – Available at O’Briens Wine
This delightful red from the German region of Pfalz is 100% Dornfelder, a hybrid grape developed in the country a few decades ago.
It has soft tannins and a combination of ripe red fruit (think cherries and cranberries), baking spices and an earthy character. While not a young wine anymore, it retains a pleasant juicy fruitiness.
Delgado Zuleta La Goya Manzanilla
15% ABV
€9.95 – Available at Green Man Wines, 64 Wines
Manzanilla Sherries are a type of fino produced in Sanlúcar de Barrameda where the sea’s influence is stronger than in the rest of Jerez.
Dry as a desert, it’s a mouth watering and nutty wine that simply opens the appetite. Aromas of toasted baguette, seawater and salted almonds, with a delicate herbal note.
