Three Wines to Embrace the Festive Mood this Weekend

As the countdown to Christmas progresses, the wine scene in Dublin becomes more and more vibrant. The highly anticipated O’Briens Winter Wine Festival took place last weekend and yesterday Dublin joined the celebrations for Beaujolais Nouveau Day, which is celebrated on the third Thursday of July every year.

Besides the big events, this week I discovered an oasis of Italian delights in the heart of Smithfield: Little Italy, a shop with plenty of exclusive and irresistible treats from a country that might not be playing at next year’s World Cup, but that is still a champion when it comes to great taste.

Below, three wines for your weekend…

A BUBBLY REVELATION

12.5% ABV

€40 – Available at O’Briens Wine

This was a wonderful surprise at the O’Briens Winter Wine Festival: a Californian vintage sparkling wine made from 100% Chardonnay that not only offers excellent taste but a very friendly price.

It has a pleasant toasted character, think almond croissants, combined with aromas and flavours of ripe lemons and green apples. With very lively bubbles and a vibrant mouth-feel, this fizz will be ideal to get any party started.

WHITE AND WINTRY

Three Wines to Embrace the Festive Mood this WeekendFazi Battaglia Massaccio Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore DOCG

2014

13.5% ABV

€22 – Available at Little Italy

This is the type of white wine that won’t feel out of place on a chilly November evening. It’s 100% Verdicchio from high altitude, south facing vineyards. The wine is left on its lees for over 6 months and bottle aged for at least 8 months, which elevates the high quality fruit into a rich and complex wine.

Expect intensity and high acidity, harmoniously balanced with a a very delicate hint of sweetness. Flavours of limoncello, fresh pineapple, almonds and key lime pie are enhanced by the wine’s body. It has a long and pleasant finish.

A NATURAL TREAT

12% ABV

€19.95 – Available at Green Man Wines, Le Caveau

Not everything in life has to be complex to be enjoyable and this wine is proof. It’s an unsulphured and unfiltered version of the popular young wine from Gamay grapes, with a rustic charm to it and a juicy, fruity character where red cherries and strawberries take over.

Low in tannins and very easy to drink, it’s a good red to get white wine drinkers started and a perfect match for a cheese and charcuterie board.
