Watch: The Chef Behind World’s First Michelin Starred Street Stall

Not so long ago Michelin stars were only in the reach of the top layer of fine-dining establishments, but over the past few years the Michelin judges have been unearthing culinary diamonds in the rough in more unexpected places.

Last year, Tsuta in Tokyo, the world’s first ramen noodle bar to received a Michelin star, and most recently for the very first time Michelin bestowed stars on street food.

In the recently released inaugural Singapore guidebook, Michelin awarded two street food stalls, Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, along with 29 other dining venues across Singapore.

Since then Michelin have shared the story of one of those star recipients: chef-owner Chan Hon Meng of Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle – from the moment he found out that he’s been nominated, to his journey to take his spot on the global culinary stage at the 2016 Michelin Guide Singapore Gala Dinner cum Award Ceremony.

Watch the video below to see how a street food stall has come to represent Singapore on the world stage.

Singapore is the first south-east Asian country in the world, and the fourth in Asia, to be rated by the Michelin Guide. You can view the full list of Singapore’s Michelin-starred eateries at www.guide.michelin.sg/2016-michelin-guide-singapore-launches.
