Wine of the Week from O’Briens: Lisa McGuigan Silver Collection Chardonnay 2014

On Thursday, 22nd of September 2016, night and day will be almost equally long. The date marks the autumnal equinox, which means we are now officially entering a new season.

However, as the Northern Hemisphere goes pumpkin-orange, in the southern part of the world, Spring has just begun and while we’ll have plenty of time in the upcoming weeks to dwell in mulled wine and other winter warmers, our wine of the week gives a nod to Australia’s intensifying sunshine.

Wine of the Week from O’Briens: Lisa McGuigan Silver Collection Chardonnay 2014Lisa McGuigan Silver Collection Chardonnay 2014 is part of a range of wines made by Lisa McGuigan, fourth generation of a family of outstanding winemakers in the Hunter Valley, the collection focuses on highlighting great wine regions and the ideal grapes to grow in them.

In this case, we have a Chardonnay from South Australia, made from selected vineyards across the region. They use stainless style for a fresh style that retains its fruitiness and lightness. With 13% ABV, and a moderate acidity, it is medium bodied and very easy to drink.

It’s clear, pale and lemon coloured, and its aromas are pleasant and mildly intense. Green apples and nectarines lead, with a fresh citrus feel in the background which intensifies on the palate, where a hint of melon and white peach is a welcomed, delicate touch.

It’s a real crowd-pleaser, and a lovely wine to pair with mildly seasoned fish or chicken dishes, for example, try a crispy hake in beer batter or a cheesy chicken and broccoli pasta bake.

Lisa McGuigan Silver Collection Chardonnay 2014 is available at O’Briens Wines and it’s on offer at €10 as part of their big September Wine Sale (regular price €14.95).
