Wine of the Week from O’Briens: Rizzardi Frizzante Prosecco

This Wednesday is the last day of August. A day we wave good-bye to a summer that brought us a day when Dublin was hotter than Barcelona, the villain-centered blockbuster (and Halloween 2016 inspiration fuel) Suicide Squad, Britney Spear’s comeback and Rihanna’s work, work, work, work, work.

Pop culture references aside, now that we’re falling into autumn let us indulge in one last summery pleasure and what better than a bubbly Italian to bring a cheerful smile to any lip it touches?

Wine Wednesday Pick from O’Briens: Rizzardi Frizzante ProseccoRizzardi Frizzante Prosecco is a wonderfully versatile mildly sparkling wine, which just like of those friends that are up for any plan, is lovely company whether you invite it over for movie night, a dinner party, night in town and even for one last estival picnic while the weather allows it.

Guerrieri Rizzardi, the wine house behind this bubbly from the Veneto is a prestigious name in the northen Itlian region and their history can be traced back to the mid 17th century. The grapes, 100% Glera, come only from trusted vineyards grown in the cooler area around Soligo. The wine, with a light 11.5% ABV, is fermented for about 20 days at a fresh, controlled temperature of 15°C to 16°C and then matured in stainless steel vats for 2 to 3 months.

De-steming and a gentle crushing of the grapes adds to a delicate result: pale lemony colour, and with a shy citrus nose, it soon becomes comfortable enough to showcase pear and white flower aromas. It’s light bodied and very fresh on the palate, the bubbles exhibit the coyness expected in a Frizzante but a surprising persistence.

Pairings of food with this Prosecco should be gentle flavoured, for example, this Goats Cheese Pizza, or perhaps a brunch classic such as poached eggs. You know what? just take it for a picnic and it’ll be grand, check out our suggestions for a fabulous outdoors foodie experience.

Rizzardi Frizzante Prosecco is available at O’Briens Wines at €14.95 and it’s currently on offer so you can get two for €25. A further 10% off is up for grabs when buying 6 bottles.
