Wines of California by Suzi Redmond

Wines of California held an intimate master class the other Thursday in Stanley’s restaurant on St. Andrews Street. Organised by Justine Adam and hosted by the ever-engaging Liam Campbell from the Irish Independent, it was quite the enthralling event.

Liam led us through some new and vibrant Californian wines as well as giving us a peppering of fun facts. Such as, 90% of all wine from the US is from California, with Chardonnay being the most popular of the 117 grape varieties grown. And did you know that Gallo Wines produces more wine than Portugal? Neither did I!

Here are three great wines from California for you to try.

Rutherford Ranch - Chardonnay (2)Rutherford Napa Chardonnay 2013 €25.99 – Available from Clontarf Wines, Co Dublin, La Touche Wines 4U LTD, Co. Wicklow, The Parting Glass Co. Wicklow, Sweeneys, Glasnevin

This wine has a big and beautiful nose full of tropical fruits, bananas, papaya and lime leaf. The wine has a lovely soft body with a touch of spice. The tropical fruits come through beautifully with a hint of blackberry peeking through. It is a relaxed, fresh and elegant wine.

ClineCline County Estate Chardonnay 2013 €19.99 – Available from James Nicholson Wine Merchants

A wine with an intriguing and aromatic nose, with notes of toast, vanilla and pear. On the palate the wine is full with toasted vanilla and luscious fruit such as pears, pineapples and apple. It has an elegant use of oak. Overall, a delicious full wine.

On the nose this wine is ripe with spiced plums, red apple and blackberries. The scents of cedar and spice really give it a sultry quality. The nose follows onto the palate beautifully with the addition blueberries, fresh figs and sultry earthy tones. A classic Zinfandel that has been beautifully crafted.
